Our Story & Mission

Who is German Technik?

German Technik is an independent Euro auto workshop based in Melbourne, trusted by owners who want specialist care without the dealership cost and hassle. The workshop was built from the ground up by technicians who have spent their entire working lives under bonnets, behind diagnostic screens and solving the problems that leave generalist mechanics scratching their heads.

Founder Tim’s story with Volkswagen Group (VAG) vehicles began at just 14. He started on the tools early, completing a long apprenticeship at Volkwerke, where he developed a deep respect for German engineering and the attention to detail it demands. From there he moved into the dealership world at Audi Centre Melbourne, completing factory training courses and honing his diagnostic skills on new-generation Audi models.

Experience at independent specialists like Volks Affair and time with Audi Spares (now Auto Union) rounded out his knowledge of both dealership and independent workshop environments. Those years shaped his belief that European car owners deserve dealership-level expertise, but with honest advice, personalised service and realistic pricing.

German Technik was created from that belief. Over 13+ years, the workshop has grown into a tight-knit team with close to six decades of combined experience, united by a shared passion for European vehicles.

Our Mission & Philosophy

From day one, German Technik’s mission has been simple:

  • Deliver precision servicing and repairs that respect the way European cars are engineered.
  • Give every customer clear, honest guidance, no pushy sales, no surprises.
  • Focus on long-term vehicle health, not short-term upsells.

Every car that comes into the workshop is assessed on its own needs. The team takes into account:

  • Your service history
  • The current condition and age of the vehicle
  • How and where you drive (city commute, freeway, country, track days)
  • Your plans for the car (daily driver, future sale, long-term keeper or performance project)

From there, we tailor a service or repair plan that makes sense for you and your vehicle, explaining options clearly before any work goes ahead.

What Drives the Business

German Technik is built on a few core beliefs:

Attention to Detail Matters: From torque settings and fluid specifications to how your wiring looms are routed, the small things are what keep modern European vehicles trouble-free.

Every car is unique: Two identical models can need very different care depending on age, mileage and how they’re driven. We don’t do “one-size-fits-all” servicing.

Safety comes first: Brakes, tyres, suspension and steering are never rushed. If something isn’t safe, we’ll tell you and we’ll show you why.

Honesty builds trust: If a repair can wait, we’ll say so. If there’s a more cost-effective way to get the same result, we’ll explain it.

It’s this blend of detail, transparency and genuine care that keeps customers coming back year after year.

Meet the Team

Behind every precise diagnosis and trouble-free test drive is a team that genuinely loves what they do and the cars they work on.

Tim

Tim is the founder and lead technician at German Technik, bringing close to three decades of hands-on experience with Volkswagen Group brands, especially Audi, Volkswagen and Škoda. He spent nine years completing his apprenticeship and developing his craft at Volkwerke, followed by four years at Audi Centre Melbourne, where he undertook factory training courses and specialised in advanced diagnostics.

He then broadened his experience with three years at Volks Affair and a further three years at Audi Spares. Along the way, Tim has earned technical awards, including winning a national Audi R8 diagnostic challenge, and outside the workshop he’s just as car-focused, with a long-standing passion for motorsport and rallying that he shares with his wife.

Jason

Jason adds more than 30 years of industry experience to the workshop, with a deep technical background in Volkswagen Group vehicles and parts diagnostics. As co-founder of Audi Spares (now Auto Union) alongside John Gourlay, he has spent much of his career immersed in sourcing, interpreting and matching the right components for Euro cars. His ability to combine real-world mechanical knowledge with parts expertise means he’s often the one who can quickly untangle complex compatibility questions and help keep repairs efficient, accurate and cost-effective.

The Workshop Team

Together, Tim and Jason lead a workshop team of fully qualified technicians who are specifically trained in European vehicles. The team works with modern factory tooling and diagnostic equipment, following processes that emphasise care, accuracy and repeatable quality. Professionalism underpins every step, from the way vehicles are checked in and inspected, to upfront, itemised quoting and clear explanations of recommended work. Guided by the same values and standards, the team puts customers first, delivering clear communication, honest recommendations and quality workmanship that keeps each vehicle performing at its best for the long term.
